Rhyming words

The four year olds are practising phonetic awareness by identifying rhyming words. Belén found this great song, so now we have actions to show if two words rhyme (that rhymes!) or don't (no way!)

The 5 year olds have been busy this term with lots of different activities in their literacy sessions. At word level, they have been completing caption puzzles, first looking for the picture that matches the caption, then each individual word, in order. At sentence level, they have been playing "look and find", a game created by Belén to practice vocabulary and questions in context. With only words, they have to find all the objects on the list (to practise vocabulary), then they read questions and look for the items. It's a really challenging and highly motivating game! Theyare also continuing with shared stories, talking about characters, transport items, places and actions. Fantastic!

The 4 year olds have been playing with loop cards to practice reading CVC words and "look and find": a fantastic game created by Belén to practice reading and looking for objects. Great job!

The three year olds have been busy in their phonics classes! Every lesson starts by reviewing the sounds. Then lots of games like looking for sounds and matching letters. These activities aim to increase vocabulary and understand sound and letter correspondence. Great job!

Some of the 5 year olds finished their snack early today, and I caught them playing our "Tricky Words" game. I was so impressed I recorded them! Well done!

5 phonics

The five year olds have also been very busy in the literacy sessions. This term they are learning about alternative spelling and "Tricky words". Yesterday 5A were busy playing lots of games with tricky words. First we reviewed all sounds, then sang the high frequency word song. Then I told them a tricky word, they looked at it in pairs and then had to find it around the classroom. Then we did a similar activity on the carpet, this time orally. I told them the word and they had to find it. Finally, they told me a tricky word and then looked in books to find it. I am really impressed with how quickly they are learning. For some reason they find the words "many, before, and other" really funny! Here is a video of the activities:

Most of the five year olds are reading really well in English! We have been practising "Speed Sounds" in preparation for primary school, We have been doing dictations, reading and illustrating captions, and asking questions.


And finally.... we are reading! Ester and I are very proud of our five year olds. Thank you to the parents for encouraging at home too! We did it!

Wizard of Oz

The 5 year olds have been busy working on the story "The Wizard of Oz".
They have done many activities:

Maths Table: Scarecrow Game.
Science Table: Tornado Drawing.
Creative Table: Shapes.
Construction Table: Re-telling the Story.

They have been working very hard to practice their speaking skills. Well done!

The five year olds are reading in English! First, they practice letter sounds in pairs and then read the words. They have started reading simple story books and I am very proud of their progress!

To practice at home, you can sing the jolly phonics songs on the right hand side of the blog, and I have put a link to a phonics website "starfall", which has some great stories to read online. It is a website with American English pronunciation, but is a valuable tool for reading practice. I hope you enjoy the activities.

¡Los niños/as de 5 años leemos en inglés! Primero practicamos los sonidos de las letras y luego leemos las palabras. Han empezado leyendo libros con cuentos sencillos y ¡estoy estoy muy orgullosa de sus progresos!

Para practicar en casa podéis cantar las canciones de "jolly phonics" que están en la parte derecha del blog y he puesto un enlace a la web "starwall", que tienen buenos cuentos para leer online. Es una página con pronunciación de inglés americano pero es una herramienta válida para practicar la lectura. Espero que disfrutéis de las actividades.
