On Wednesday mornings, the 5 year olds have a library session as part of their literacy subject.
The first week, we read a story together. We then identify key parts of the story, describe the characters and decide our star rating (which is usually 5 stars!!!). Then we look in the story for a particular letter, sound or punctuation mark and count them. Then we choose books in English and look for the same sound, letter or punctuation mark as in the previous activity.
The next week, we write a book review. We write our name, title of the book, author, and together we write about the plot and characters. Then we choose our favourite part of the story and write a sentence and draw a picture. Then we go to the small tables to colour our drawings and give a star rating.
The children work really well in these sessions, it is amazing to see how they improve each week, looking for ways to express their thoughts in English. For example, instead of saying "mummy se fue", the children suggested "mummy bye-bye". They are able to use their English vocabulary to communicate their ideas, a very important step in speaking English!!!
La mañana de los miércoles los niños/as de 5 años tienen una sesión en a la biblioteca escolar como del área de literacy.
La primera semana leemos un libro juntos. Luego identificamoslas partes principales del libro, describimos a los personajes y decidimos nuestro “star rating” (la puntuación en estrellas que damos al libro según nos haya gustado), que suele ser normalmente de 5 estrellas. Luego buscamos s en el libro una letra en particular, un sonido, un signo de puntuación y contamos. Luego elegimos otros libros en inglés y buscamos el mismo sonido, letra o signo de puntuación de la actividad anterior.
La semana siguiente escribimos una reseña del libro. Escribimos nuestro nombre, el título del libro, el autor y juntos escribimos la trama y los personajes. Luego elegimos nuestra parte favorita del libro y escribimos una frase y hacemos un dibujo. Después vamos a las mesas pequeñas para colorear los dibujos y dar nuestra opinión con el “star rating”.
Los niños/as trabajan realmente bien en estas sesiones. Es sorprendente ver como mejoran cada semana, buscándolas formas de expresar sus pensamientos en inglés. Por ejemplo, en lugar de decir "mummy (la madre) se fue", los niños sugieren "mummy bye-bye" (madre adiós). Son capaces de utilizar su vocabulario en inglés para comunicar sus ideas, un paso muy importante al hablar en inglés.
